Saint Kitts and Nevis Travel Guide: Completing the Americas in Basseterre

Saint Kitts and Nevis was country number 138 on my mission to visit every country in the world. It was also the country where I completed the entire Americas.

๐Ÿ“Œ Quick Facts About Saint Kitts and Nevis ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ณ

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a small two-island country in the Caribbean, with Basseterre as its capital on the island of Saint Kitts. For many travelers, it is visited as part of a Caribbean cruise itinerary, but it is also possible to fly in directly and explore Basseterre independently.

My visit was short, but it became a huge personal milestone because it completed the Americas for me.

๐ŸŒŽ Completing the Americas

Saint Kitts and Nevis was a major milestone for me because it completed the entire Americas on my journey to visit every country in the world. I had finally visited every country in North America, South America, and everything in between.

Most of the Lesser Antilles I had visited by cruise ship. Royal Caribbean in particular connects many of the Caribbean island nations, making it possible to visit a large number of those relatively efficiently.

Saint Kitts and Nevis, however, was one of the countries I did not visit by cruise ship. I flew to Basseterre from Barbados with InterCarribean. After Saint Kitts, I continued to Antigua and Barbuda with British Airways.

๐Ÿ›ฌ Arriving in Basseterre

The first pleasant surprise was how close the airport is to the city center. You can actually walk from the airport to downtown Basseterre in around 25 minutes, which is quite unusual for a Caribbean island.

That being said, most visitors never do this. The vast majority of tourists arrive by cruise ship. If you ever visit Saint Kitts and Nevis yourself, chances are you will arrive by sea rather than by air.

I only had a single day on the island, so in many ways my visit felt similar to a cruise stop.

Basseterre was easy to explore on foot during a short one-day visit.

๐Ÿšข The Cruise Port and Independence Square

My first destination was the cruise port area. This is the heart of tourism in Basseterre and where most visitors spend at least part of their day.

There are plenty of souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and small local businesses catering to cruise passengers. You will also find the popular Saint Kitts and Nevis sign where many visitors stop for photos. The entire waterfront area feels very relaxed and welcoming.

From there, I continued to Independence Square, one of the most important historical locations in the city. Today it serves as a pleasant public park, but historically it has witnessed much of the country's colonial history.

This was where I filmed my juggling video for Saint Kitts and Nevis (Watch Juggling in Every Country). And that was when something completely unexpected happened.

๐Ÿคน A Random Birthday Party and a $20 Juggling Show

While I was juggling in Independence Square, a local man approached me and started asking questions about what I was doing.

After a short conversation, he told me it was his aunt's birthday and insisted that I should come celebrate with them. At first, I was not sure. I only had one day in the country and wanted to explore as much as possible.

But then he added another detail. He wanted me to perform some juggling at the birthday party and offered to pay me for it.

At that point, I thought: why not?

A few minutes later, I found myself at a birthday celebration surrounded by people I had never met before. Everybody was incredibly welcoming. I performed a little juggling show, met the family, and spent time chatting with everyone.

As promised, he handed me $20 afterward as a thank-you. It remains one of the most random paid juggling performances of my entire life.

"You always need to drink two beers. Otherwise you're out of balance."

I cannot confirm the scientific accuracy of that local wisdom, but I followed it as told.

โ›ช Churches, Memorials and Colonial History

After leaving the birthday party, I continued exploring Basseterre. Many Caribbean islands share similar historical influences and feel alike.

You often find a cruise port, colonial architecture, churches, forts, and monuments reflecting British, French, Spanish, or Dutch history. Saint Kitts and Nevis is no exception.

I visited the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most prominent churches in the city, as well as St. George's Anglican Church. Both are reminders of the strong Christian traditions that shaped the islands over centuries.

I also stopped at the Basseterre War Memorial, which commemorates soldiers from Saint Kitts and Nevis who served in the British forces during the First and Second World Wars.

Walking around the city center, you can also find old cannons and colonial-era structures that reflect the strategic importance the islands once had during the age of European colonial competition in the Caribbean.

๐Ÿ๏ธ What I Wish I Had Seen With More Time

Although I only explored Basseterre itself, the islands are incredibly beautiful from the air. Flying into Saint Kitts offered fantastic views of green mountains, coastlines, beaches, and the neighboring island of Nevis.

Looking back, I definitely wish I had spent more time there. One day is enough to see the highlights of Basseterre, but not enough to truly explore the country.

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park: a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the "Gibraltar of the West Indies."
  • South Friars Bay and Cockleshell Beach: two of the most popular beaches on Saint Kitts.
  • Nevis: the country's second island, known for its relaxed atmosphere, scenery, and historic plantations. Definitely want to visit one day.

One day was enough for Basseterre, but I would love to see more of the island and also visit Nevis.

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts on Visiting Saint Kitts and Nevis

What stood out most to me were the people. Everyone I met was friendly, welcoming, and curious.

From the family who invited me to a birthday party to the strangers I chatted with while walking through town, I left with a very positive impression of the country.

Saint Kitts and Nevis may have only been a one-day stop for me, but it marked the completion of an entire continent on my journey around the world.

And thanks to an unexpected birthday invitation and a spontaneous juggling performance, it became a day I will never forget.
