How to Find Cheap Accommodation Anywhere in the World

After thousands of nights on the road, this is how I compare hotels, hostels, apartments, guesthouses, and local stays without wasting money on bad accommodation.

Accommodation is not always about luxury. Sometimes it is about location, logistics, and the story. Here I am in Rason, North Korea.

Quick Answer

Accommodation can easily become the biggest expense of a trip. My first stop is usually *Booking.com, but the real trick is comparing hotels, hostels, apartments, location, reviews, and transport costs instead of simply booking the first cheap room.

My Favorite Accommodation Search Tool

Flights usually get all the attention when people talk about travel costs. But after visiting all 195 countries, I have learned that accommodation can easily become the biggest expense of a trip.

The good news is that finding affordable places to stay has never been easier. Whether you are looking for a luxury hotel in Dubai, a budget hostel in Southeast Asia, a private apartment in Eastern Europe, or simply the cheapest bed available, there are countless ways to save money without sacrificing comfort.

When people ask me where I book hotels, my first answer is pretty simple: *Booking.com. I have tested countless accommodation platforms over the years, but Booking consistently provides strong search tools, large inventories, and reliable reviews.

Of course, Booking.com is not the only option. Most major booking platforms work in a similar way: compare location, price, reviews, cancellation rules, taxes, and the final total before you book. I also check *Agoda, *Expedia, and *Trip.com when I want another price comparison.

Within seconds, you can sort by lowest price, highest rating, location, property type, amenities, free breakfast, and free cancellation. For most destinations around the world, Booking is the first place I check.

The Biggest Mistake Travelers Make

Many people assume they need to stay in hotels. In reality, accommodation comes in many different forms: hotels, hostels, apartments, guesthouses, homestays, Couchsurfing, airport overnights, night buses, and night trains.

The smartest travelers do not ask, "Which hotel should I book?" They ask, "What is the best place to sleep for this particular trip?" Sometimes that is a hotel. Sometimes it is a hostel. Sometimes it is a luxury apartment. And sometimes it is no accommodation at all because you are traveling overnight.

Luxury Hotels Are Often Cheaper Than You Think

One of the biggest surprises of my travels has been discovering how affordable luxury hotels can be in certain parts of the world. Many travelers associate five-star hotels with Europe, the United States, or Japan, where prices can easily exceed several hundred dollars per night.

But in countries such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam, five-star hotels can sometimes cost less than a basic hotel room in Western Europe.

I have stayed in luxury hotels with rooftop pools, huge breakfast buffets, gyms, spas, and city views for less than the price of a hostel bed in some European capitals. Always sort by price and then filter by four-star and five-star hotels. You might be surprised by what appears. In Dubai for example, you can often find last-minute same-day five star hotels for less than 25 USD per person, if you are travelling with 2.

Read the Reviews Carefully

This is probably the most important accommodation tip I can give. Never book solely based on photos. Always read reviews.

A beautiful hotel with terrible reviews usually turns out to be terrible. Meanwhile, a simple-looking guesthouse with hundreds of positive reviews can turn out to be an amazing experience.

  • Above 8.0: usually very good.
  • Above 9.0: often excellent.
  • Below 7.0: proceed carefully.

Most importantly, never book properties that have no reviews at all. NEVER! Reviews are always more valuable than the official star rating. We did that once in Kyiv, Ukraine, and never saw our money again. Do NOT book no-reviews properties, simlply because it says "4 stars".

Apartments Can Offer Incredible Value

When traveling with friends, apartments often become the best deal available. Instead of booking multiple hotel rooms, you can split the cost of a large apartment between several people.

Benefits often include more space, kitchen access, laundry facilities, better locations, and a lower cost per person.

In cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Istanbul, or Buenos Aires, it is often possible to rent an entire apartment for less than the cost of even a single hotel room. For longer stays, apartments are frequently the smartest option.

Hostels Are Better Than Most People Think

Many travelers avoid hostels because they imagine crowded rooms, noisy guests, and uncomfortable beds. While bad hostels certainly exist, many modern hostels are fantastic.

I have stayed in hostels with swimming pools, coworking spaces, free breakfast, organized tours, private rooms, and rooftop bars.

Hostels also provide something hotels rarely offer: people. If you are traveling solo, hostels are often the easiest place to meet other travelers. You do not have to stay in a dorm room either. Many hostels offer private rooms that are still cheaper than nearby hotels.

One important note: not every hostel is listed on Booking.com. If you stay in hostels often, it is also worth checking *Hostelworld, which is still one of the best apps for comparing hostel dorms, private rooms, and traveler reviews.

Consider Staying Outside the City Center

One simple way to save money is to stay slightly farther from the main tourist areas. Accommodation prices often drop dramatically just a few metro stops away from the city center.

Instead of staying directly in central Paris, London, or Tokyo, consider neighborhoods that are 15 to 20 minutes away by public transport. The difference in price can be substantial while the inconvenience remains minimal. For comparing trains and buses in Europe, I often use *Omio.

Always compare accommodation costs against transportation costs. On the flip side, sometimes a hotel that looks cheaper ends up costing more because of expensive daily commutes.

Couchsurfing: The Ultimate Budget Option

If your goal is to spend as little money as possible while meeting locals, Couchsurfing can be an incredible resource. The concept is simple: locals offer travelers a free place to stay.

But the real value is not saving money. It is the experience. Some of my most memorable travel experiences came from spending time with locals who showed me parts of their city that I never would have discovered on my own.

Couchsurfing is not for everyone, but if you are open-minded and enjoy cultural exchange, it can completely transform how you travel. It is especially popular around Europe and Asia. I have had great Couchsurfing experiences in Indonesia, the Philippines and Dubai, among others.

Do Not Overbook Your Trip

Many travelers book every hotel months in advance. Personally, I often prefer staying flexible, especially in countries with plenty of accommodation options.

Flexibility allows you to extend stays in places you love, leave places you do not enjoy, take advantage of last-minute deals, and adjust your route as you travel.

Major events and peak tourist seasons are exceptions. But in many destinations, booking every night months in advance is not necessary. I normally even try to book for the same day. If I like the hotel, I can still extend for several nights.

My Accommodation Strategy

  1. Open *Booking.com.
  2. Sort by price.
  3. Check review scores.
  4. Compare hotels, hostels, and apartments.
  5. Evaluate transportation costs.
  6. Read recent reviews.
  7. Book the option that offers the best value.

Notice that I said value, not necessarily the cheapest option. The goal is not spending the least amount of money. The goal is getting the most comfort, convenience, and experience for the money you spend.

Find Accommodation Deals

Cheap accommodation is not about sleeping in terrible places. It is about understanding your options. Some nights it makes sense to stay in a luxury hotel. Some nights a hostel is perfect. Sometimes an apartment is the best choice. And occasionally, the smartest strategy is taking an overnight bus or flight and saving an entire night's accommodation cost.
