Middle East Travel Guides

The Middle East is one of the most historically dense, politically complicated, and culturally fascinating regions of the whole 195 journey. Ancient cities, desert roads, holy sites, Gulf skylines, conflict zones, incredible hospitality, and some of the best food in the world all sit surprisingly close together.

🕌 Why the Middle East Is So Special

Few regions carry as much history in such a small area. The Middle East is home to some of the world's oldest cities, major world religions, ancient trade routes, desert landscapes, and modern capitals that have grown unbelievably fast in just a few decades.

It is also a region where travel can feel very different from one country to the next. Oman can feel calm and road-trip friendly, Lebanon can feel social and intense, the Gulf countries can feel futuristic and polished, while places like Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine require much more caution and context. Oh, and those countries can also be pretty restrictive and oppressive at times.

Get Travel Insurance for the Middle East

The Middle East can be straightforward in some countries and very complicated in others. Medical costs, changing safety conditions, border rules, and desert or road-trip routes make insurance worth checking.

For the Middle East, I usually compare two different types of travel insurance: SafetyWing for longer, more flexible trips, and Heymondo for fixed-date holidays with clearer start and end dates.

SafetyWing

Best for longer Middle East routes, remote workers, overland travelers, and flexible multi-country trips.

  • Good for open-ended travel
  • Useful if you do not know your exact return date
  • Works well for multi-country routes
  • Subscription-style coverage for long-term travelers
*Compare SafetyWing plans

Heymondo

Best for fixed-date holidays, Gulf trips, Jordan or Oman itineraries, and single-country routes with clear dates.

  • Good for trips with fixed dates
  • Useful when you want cancellation options
  • Often strong for medical coverage limits
  • Flexible add-ons depending on the trip
*Get a Heymondo quote

The simple rule: if you are traveling around the Middle East for weeks or months, check SafetyWing. If you are booking a specific Middle East trip with set dates, check Heymondo.

✈️ Practical Notes for Middle East Travel

The Middle East can be incredibly rewarding, but it is also a region where practical details matter. Visa rules, border stamps, regional politics, safety conditions, dress expectations, and local customs can all affect your route more than in many other parts of the world.

  • Check visa rules and entry restrictions before booking flights.
  • Research safety conditions country by country, not region by region.
  • Leave room for local advice, especially in countries with changing situations.
  • Dress and behave respectfully around religious sites and conservative areas.
  • Do not underestimate how different Gulf countries, Levant countries, and conflict-affected places can feel.
